Mid-Century Dining Room Lighting

Hang a sputnik chandelier or orb cluster 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, and size it between one half and two thirds the table width for round tables or use room length plus width in feet to set the diameter in inches. Mid-century silhouettes include sputnik and starburst chandeliers, orb and globe cluster chandeliers, saucer pendants, bubble pendants, and single globe pendants in opal or smoked glass. Finishes center on aged brass, satin brass, polished brass, polished chrome, and matte black, often grounded by walnut or teak ceiling caps. Fit G25 or G40 frosted globe bulbs or B10 candelabra bulbs at 2700K to 3000K warm white on a dimmer so the fixture reads sculptural by day and glows softly at dinner. For ceilings above 8 feet, add 3 inches of drop per foot and keep 7 feet of floor clearance.

Size the fixture to the table first. A 36-inch round table takes an 18 to 24 inch fixture. A 48-inch round or square table takes 24 to 32 inches. A 60-inch round table, or a 60 by 36 rectangular one, takes 30 to 40 inches. A 72-inch rectangular table takes 36 to 48 inches, or a linear fixture 24 to 48 inches long. At 96 inches and longer, use two matching pendants or a 48 to 72 inch linear fixture. Cross-check against the room: add the room's length and width in feet to get the diameter in inches, so a 10 by 14 foot room lands on a 24-inch chandelier.

30 to 36 inches at 8-foot ceilings; add 3 inches of drop per additional foot.

Add room length + width in feet = diameter in inches. A 10 by 14 foot room takes a 24 inch chandelier. Fixture width = 1/2 to 2/3 of table width.

36 to 48 inches for round/square, or 24 to 48 inches linear length.

2700K warm white primary, 2700K to 3000K acceptable range. CRI 90+ for natural food and skin tones.

3,000 to 4,000 lumens total, or 30 to 40 lumens per square foot.

Yes. Lets the room flex from full dinner brightness down to low ambient.

Sputnik radiates from a sphere with arms extending in all directions. Starburst radiates from a flat point, usually wall-oriented or ceiling-centered with one-directional arms.

For tables 84 inches and longer. Center at 1/3 and 2/3 marks of table length, 24 to 36 inches between fixture centers.

7 feet minimum from floor to fixture bottom. 6 inches horizontal clearance between fixture edge and table edge.
